About Bread In Common is a project that aims to discover and capture the history of community and industrial baking in North Staffordshire. Over the next few months we will be recruiting a team of volunteer bread champions to go out into their communities and record the stories, recipes and life experiences of all sorts of people, from those who remember grandmas fruit loaf to those who worked at Allied Bakeries.
The stories and photos we find will be preserved in an online archive on this website (just click Archive to see where we have got so far). There will also be an exhibition at Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Museum and Art Gallery (3 May - 13 July) showing the very best of what we find. During the exhibition there will be Big Bread Days (Sat 31 May and Sat 7 June 10-4pm) featuring practical baking workshops for all the family in which we will be trying out some of the best traditional recipes we discover.
Bread In Common is a B Arts project. B Arts is an arts organisation that has been based in North Staffordshire for thirty years and uses arts with people to improve lives and places. Bread In Common is one of a number of baking projects that B Arts is undertaking, including the building of a community-supported real bread bakery in Stoke-on-Trent.
